Well, the time has come for me to sign off and pass you over to the leaders and young people. I have had great fun writing this blog and have had many favourable responses. In fact, when I made it known that I was stopping, many of you asked for it to continue and so the Group blog was born! From now on we will be blogging at our new site. Travel Bugs

I have given it enough time for anyone to log any miles up until 1st January 2012 and so I now declare that the Cub TB came first, the Scout TB second and the Beaver one in third place. Hopefully they will continue to travel and you can get up date by looking at their pages on Geocaching.com or our new blog.

Well, my year of being the 3rd Ware centenary mascot has come to an end and I need to step back and hand over the baton.

I will still be around but will be selecting activities to go to rather than visiting them all.

I will soon announce the winner of the travel bug race (just allowing the final logs since people do not always do it on the day they go out, but it will still count if it is dated yesterday). I will give it a week or so and then declare the winner.

I will also be signing off from this blog and moving to the new Group one. This will be a joint effort and so I will not be the only one posting.

There are still a few posts outstanding from this blog because I am waiting for people to send their reports across. Once they do I will post them but backdate them to when they actually took place.

I hope 2012 is as much fun as 2011 was.

Well done Joe. Rama got your booklet today and we can see you have worked very hard over the last few days to complete the final few of your 100 challenges. Even today you Learnt to tie a Friendship knot and on Christmas day you were seeing who could eat the most cream crackers!

Ethan and Jacob also returned their today. I see that both of you have enjoyed the food aspect of this challenge, have helped with the recycling and had attended lots of Scouting events.

I have been to the Crib service (I saw many of our Group there!), have helped hang up the stockings, have left a snack for Father Christmas and the reindeer, lit the candles and have sprinkled the magic reindeer food outside on the grass (thanks Walkerdine family).

I hope your mum enjoyed her birthday surprise, Rama's wife said she saw the rockets launched on the school field in the summer, Bewilderwood sounds great fun, climbing a lighthouse is something that Rama enjoys and what sort of fruit tree did you plant? You also seemed to have completed a lot of the food activities!

I wonder what sort of things Uncle Jack told you.

100 challenge

Thank you William and Jacob...I have your booklets. Cutting the grass, cleaning windows, cleaning shoes, and collecting 100 coins for charity. Fantastic!

The food challenges seemed to have gone down well with you both as well.

I would be interested to know what your personal challenges were and who the oldest people were that you met; as well as your 10 facts about Baden Powell.

Blowing bubbles, building sandcastles, reading books, learning 100 new words and your names in sign language mus have been fun.

I enjoy doing outside challenges. I like doing night hikes, watching fireworks and building tents. I used to be in Herons but I moved into Falcons. I like doing inside ball games because when I was in Herons I used to play a good ball game. Sometimes when I get stuck on something the leaders help me. My leaders are Akela, Shere Khan and Ka. We used to have a Baloo but she left. On the last day of Cubs I got my silver award with my promise badge.

Trek Cart

Having got the trek cart out to show it off at our Historical afternoon teas a few weeks ago, the Scout leaders challenged the Scouts to take it to camp with them this Friday.

Last night Bobcat and Lynx held a joint overnight camp at the sow and pigs field. This was a fitting end to our centenary year.

The Scouts rose to the challenge, loaded up the Cart, made sure I was with them and off we went. They found it surprisingly easy to pull/push the cart and enjoyed this novel experience.

The Scouts enjoyed their night and woke to a frosty field, but a campfire and a good breakfast soon warmed everyone up.

It was a great way to end a year of special events, where we have looked back to the past and forwards to the future

Farewell Baloo

On Tuesday I went down to Falcon Pack as they were having a Christingle evening to finish the term.

They started with the chocolate game where you have to throw a six, dress in hat, gloves and a scarf then try to eat chocolate with a knife and fork. Great fun to watch as well as do! During this, the Vicar John Hookway arrived as he had been asked to help with the evening.

The Cubs got into their sixes and with the help of the leaders everyone made a Christingle from an orange, red ribbon, a candle and some sweets and raisins. When everyone had finished, they were all lit and John said a special Christingle prayer.

Then we got ready for some special presentations. Alex had finished his silver award so John was pleased to present that to him. Then we had a very special part of the evening when we said a sad farewell to Baloo who is leaving the Cubs after 15 years as a Leader. The Cubs gave her some flowers, a card that everyone had signed, and a picture made especially for her by Ian West who used to do the cartoons in the back of Scouting magazine.

In turn, Baloo gave all the Cubs and Leaders a present as well! The Leaders got a special edition of the Jungle Book, Will and Oli a buff that they are going to wear on the Explorers weekend away this coming weekend and the Cubs got a little bag each with a pencil, notebook and some sweets. Blue six got the prize for gaining most points this term then we had Grand Howl, led by Baloo for the last time!

And we weren’t even late finishing after all that excitement!

Film night

Tonight I went to Herons and finish the term off with a night at the movies.

The Cubs watched the film Elf and were served home made popcorn made by myself and Bagheera's son who came down to help.

Everyone enjoyed the film and the tasty snack. Those Herons certain love their food.

Afterwards Rama came down and presented some Silver awards and we aid Godd bye to Tom and Greg who are leaving us to live in Scotland. The Herons gave them a copy of The Jungle book as a going away present.

Tree Festival

Have you been to see our tree yet? If not pop down to Leaside tonight or tomorrow and take a look. It was decorated by the young people.

There are also many other wonderfully decorated trees, loving created and decorated by the many many local organisations.

Don't forget to give a donation to charity or write your prayer and hang it in the prayer tree.

Dickensian Evening

Tonight I was in for a surprise. I was taken to the Town Dickesian Evening and was quite happily helping on the, ever popular, 3rd Ware Bottle stall, when a very smart Victorian gentleman came and spoke to me. I suppose this is only to be expected at a Dickensian evening...

....Then the penny dropped, it was the GSL....that is two weeks in a row that I have seen him in something other than his Scout uniform or camp clothes.

I also had a walk around and visited several stalls run by other Guiding or Scouting groups as well as all the other various local organisations.

The high street was full of happy families wandering around enjoying a crisp December evening , spending some money having faun, knowing that they were helping local charities, schools and organisations.

I also bumped into a bear who was advertising the Hertford pantomime and had my photo taken with him, he was a very friendly bear and made me laugh.

Our stall proved very popular and after our last bottle was won, Ian, one of our Scout leaders stayed on to sell our Christmas stamps.

Dinner dance

The adults at 3rd Ware enjoy having fun as much as the young people do. The highlight of the centenary year for some was a chance to dress up and act like grown ups!

On Saturday we held a Dinner dance at the Roebuck hotel. A local band provided the music (all have been involved in Scouting in Ware at some point either as Scouts or parents of Scouts, although not all at our Group).

The Guests were past and present members of the Group, parents of members and others asociated with 3rd Ware. They were welcomed by three of our Young Leaders. After being greeted by the GSL, they were invited to have their photograph taken and to then proceed to the bar area where a slide show of photos was taking place. Many took this chance to sip their drink and reminisce.

Once all were present, everyone moved to the formal dining room and enjoyed a delicious meal. The GSL made a speech, the master of ceremonies kept the proceedings going and the lucky ticket winners were announced.

The meal consisted of soup, a chicken dinner and apple crumble and ice cream. Red and white wine was drunk, the commemorative scrolls were read and the formal meal came to an end. The GSL made a toast to Scouting.

Despite saying that he would keep the speeches and thanks you kept short, the GSL (and his first lady - she was unaware that she held this title!) were delighted, surprised and humbled to be thanked and then presented with a gift each. An engraved tankard for Gavin and an engraved wine glass for Jacqui. They both expressed their thanks and said it was totally unexpected and totally unwarranted.

The evening finished with more dancing, more chatting, more photos in the bar and a chance to talk to many people and celebrate a special year for 3rd Ware. Everyone seemed to have a great time and even the band said it had been fun playing at this particular event.

Lost in Stanstead Abbotts

Just thought I would let you know about my adventures this evening.

I went on a night hike with those crazy bunch the Heron Cub pack. As well as YL James, Shere Khan, Bagheera, Ballo. YL's Adam and Will, Weasel and Scout Leaders Barney and Claire (I like Claire she's pretty) not forgetting my friend Ruby the dog joined us too.

It was real fun and I bounced along on the back of Shere Khan's bag. All was going really well. We had to cross a busy road but the Cubs were very careful.

It was just then when we stopped for a quick break that I thought I would stretch my own legs. Opps, I got separated from the Cubs. But I new what to do. I waited exactly where they had left me and did not wander of. And sure enough Shere Khan's Hero Barney arrived in his Land Rover to find me.

Poor old Shere Khan was very upset when she found out I was missing.

Wow we had a great ride in the Landy that' what us Scouts call a land rover. What an adventure. Will send pictures soon.

Thanksgiving service and History display

Today I was delighted to be in our founding church and witness the Vicar juggle, mixed generations pitch a tent front and back of church, view many people trying to work out where photos went on a timeline (and which knots to use to tie them on) and so much more.

Despite the fact the GSL had lost his voice, it was still a lively and fast moving service which really celebrated the Group and what Scouting means to us all and how much difference it makes in our lives.

If you were there you will know what I am talking about, if not have a look at this small taste of the service.

Congratulations also go to Richard who was awarded his wood beads and to Lynx Troop who saw their colours dedicated.

Afterward we all retired to the HQ for tea, coffee, cake and history. A great social time and a wonderful way to round off the weekend.

This morning I paid a brief visit to Christ Church in Ware. We had a run through of our thanksgiving service tomorrow and made sure everyone knows what they are doing.

Green Beret

The Green Beret Challenge is a weekend competition for teams of six Scouts. The event is open to all Scout Troops, who may enter as many Teams as practically possible. Teams from outside Hertfordshire are also very welcome, and compete for their own Trophy To achieve the Green Beret Challenge, teams compete in FOUR elements:

- Orienteering

- Assault Course

- Challenge Incidents (daytime)

- Night Exercise

The Challenge is designed to test a group of Scouts through a range of physical and intellectual activities. It also proves to be a significant challenge to their Leadership and Teamwork skills.

No doubt about it, IT’S TOUGH!! However, the Scouts can and do survive, provided they are prepared for the weather, and have trained beforehand. The Challenge is held in November, cold and wet weather is the normal for this time of year. This only adds to the challenge.

Two teams of 3rd Ware Scouts took part and so did our GSL who was on the committee and lots of the local Explorers, many of whom are ex 3rd Ware or still involved at Young leaders.

The Explorers were running several of the bases and one involved pulling a Landrover! This proved irresistible to many.

The Green Beret is always a popular event with 3rd Ware Scouts and one which the younger ones can not wait to take part in. Full results are available of the county website,which is also where I got much of this information from. The Scouts may have enjoyed the events but they were not so forth coming when asked to write about it! Thanks also to the YL and GSL for their words.

Today we were fortunate that Matt Baker rode his Rickshaw through our town. 2nd Ware Scout Group even managed to present him with a badge and a neck scarf.

Some of our Young People were able to cheer him on with their school.

Trains

At the last minute I managed to wangle an evening with river Ash beavers – they were going on a train. Weasel picked me up and took me to the train station at Van Hages. It was very special because the beavers made some lanterns for Diwali last week and had them lit all around the track – it looked very pretty.

We were split up into 2 groups the first group sat on the train and the beaver in front moved up to drive the train. The Station Master let us borrow his hat whilst we drove the train along the track. We went through a tunnel and round a big pond. It was very dark. We all got a chance to drive the train - it was great fun

The second group went to see around the Engine and maintenance rooms – there were some very old looking trains in there. And we walked along a lit pathway

When the first group had finished having there turn the second group then got to drive the train.

Ratty also organised for us to do some colouring in. I helped Caitlin with hers.

I am not sure who had more fun, the beavers, the leaders or me!!!!

All in all it was a fantastic evening and we all got a certificate at the end to say we had driven the train.

We will remember them

Today our town held the annual Remembrance day parade and church service. I decided that this was one event where I would be a bystander rather than join in. I did not really think it was appropriate for me to parade.

However many of 3rd Ware did. The older Cubs, the Scouts, the Young Leaders and the Leaders joined the other uniformed Groups from our town and surrounding villages and took part.

The parade starts at one end of town, passes through the High street and into Church for an act of Remembrance. Then the colour bearers and wreath holders stand by the war memorial and everyone else forms up behind. The traffic is stopped and the wreaths are laid.

The parade then falls in and returns to the other end of town before being dismissed.

I was honoured to be taken to observe and say well done to all who took part, especially the Young people who, as usual at this service, acted with decorum and respect.

District Day

Today the members of Ware and District met at Christ Church School in Ware, to discuss the future of the District. We have had 100 years of very successful Scouting and so do we continue as we are or do we make changes?

Members of every Group in the district met and spent the day in numerous workshops outlining the future.

Rikki, the County Commissioner also attended and put forward his views. It was a long day, but a productive day.

We also learnt about Lochearnhead 2013. Will I be allowed to go?

I wonder what the next 100 years will bring?

westminster Abbey

Yesterday I went to a very different kind of church service at Westminster Abbey in London.

There was a National Scout and Guide service of Celebration and Thanksgiving held there and there were Leaders from all over the country. I went with the Falcon Akela and her husband Duncan who was actually the one invited as he has given over 30 years of service to the Scout Association as a Leader in Hertford District.

We caught the train from Hertford North because there were no trains from Ware, and went to Kings Cross where we met Akela’s mum and dad who were also invited. We travelled on the Underground to Westminster Station, then joined the queue to get into the Abbey. The service was quite short with several hymns, readings, prayers and a talk by the Chaplain to the Speaker to the House of Commons. There were some really nice interviews with Young People who had achieved lots of different things with their time in Scouts or Guides, they had all got their Queens Award, been to Jamborees and tried many different and exciting activities. After the interviews we renewed our Promise again before singing the National Anthem.

I then visited the Memorial to Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, who were the Founders of both the Scout and Guide Movements and were the World Chief Scout and Guide.

After that we went to a restaurant and had lunch, before going back to Kings Cross. On the way back we visited Platform 9 3/4 and I had my photo taken on Harry Potter’s luggage trolley before we travelled home to Ware.

Sparklers

River Lea Beavers always like to mark Guy Fawkes night in one way or another. Tonight I joined them to make cardboard fireworks, learn the safety code and then to enjoy waving a sparkler around outside. I had great fun.

Daring dos and ghastly ghouls

Last night I was taken out onto the Meads by the Heron Pack.

Apparently some ghouls were trying to put toxic waste into our water system.

The trusty Herons had been asked to scout the Meads, locate the toxic waste and remove it all, thus saving the people of Ware from certain death!

You will be glad to know that we rescued the town!

I was rather disappointed though to not meet any of the fiendish creatures, I wonder where they all were....but then again a pack of Cubs rampaging around in the dark is enough to scare even the hardiest of Ghouls.

This Thursday River Ash Beavers visited Christ Church as part of their Promise challenge badge. We learned about the history of the church, which is about 150 years old, and were told the story of Moses.

After a drink, we explored the church with a quiz, which took is round some of the main areas, and left us with a sentence to unscramble.

Night away

As you know I have had lots of nights away this year (I really must count them and get my badges sewn on).

However the most recent one was a little bit different. For those of you who do not know, I spend most of my time living with the GSL and his family and have got to know them all very well and sometimes they take me on extra activities.

At WaGAwood two of his children looked after me, one is a young leader at 3rd Ware and the other is an "Honorary Beaver", she does not actually attend our Beaver colonies (her choice) but goes to Rainbows. However out of necessity, she often attends Beaver events and is in class with lots of the Beavers.

This weekend she had a Rainbow sleepover and I was invited along as a special guest to see how it differed from a Beaver sleepover. Actually it was quite similar - lots of fun and lots of activities to keep us busy.

We went to Cottered (this was where the afore mention Young leader had his first ever Beaver sleepover many many years ago!) and I had a great time.

The theme was holidays and we had a photo taken and made a frame for it, made a place mat, played chinese whispers, went to the shop and bought some badges, ate a stick of rock and fish and chips, did some washing up, watched a film, played outside and lots lots more.

It was great fun. I don't think I will go on one again because my little Rainbow friend will be too old next year but I am glad I got the chance to see what Rainbows do, after all Guiding was started by Baden Powell as well.

I now need to ask for my 1 night away badge from Rainbows!

100 Challenge

Well Tom asked his Mum to send an email in reply.

Tom said the following :

" I really enjoyed completing the 100 challenge as it was always fun things that I could do with my friends or family.

I did lots of them at Beavers, at home and quite a few on some of our holidays.

I am really pleased I am on the blog, I cannot believe it" .

Harvest good deed

Our Centenary activity for October was to provided Harvest baskets for local residents.

I went along to Falcon Pack Cubs as they were helping to make up the harvest baskets.

Everyone in the Group had been asked to donate a tin or packet of some sort and when we looked in the stores there were loads of things in there!

Tins of soup, fruit, fish, custard, rice pudding along with packets of biscuits, tea and even some boxes of chocolates!

Some of the Cubs, Falcon Leaders, Dormouse and Bagheera from Heron Pack helped to sort everything into types of food to make sure that there were lots of different things in each parcel. Then the baskets were lined with tissue paper and they began to fill them.

Other Cubs were making harvest cards so that everyone could have one of them as well, and some of the older Cubs were addressing the card envelopes so that the leaders know where to take the baskets and the people who receive them know where they had come from!

The HQ was very busy for an hour whilst everything was got ready, then the Cubs were able to have their drink and biscuit while Dormouse and Shere Khan wrapped the baskets to make them look really nice. Then Baloo, Oli and Will helped to carry them all into the stores so that they can be collected and delivered over the next few days.

After all the excitement four of the new Cubs were invested which meant that the meeting finished rather late (nothing new there I hear!) and I went home with Oli as I am going to be measured up for a very smart suit for the dinner dance......

Silver Award

I always enjoy an evening with the Herons and usually have a lot of fun with them.

Last week I was invited down again, but this time it was for a different occasion altogether. We weren't tramping across the meads, whizzing around London or even cooking. No, this time the GSL, and I, went down to present a Cub with his Silver Award.

This award is the highest a Cub Scout can get and means that they have participated fully in the life of the pack, not just on the usual evenings, but also in plenty of extra-curricular activities. They must also have worked hard by themselves and home and will have needed family support to do this.

This particular Silver Award is just one of many Chief Scout Awards that are gained at 3rd Ware each year with many Beavers being awarded Bronze, Cubs Silver and Scouts their Gold. We are proud of them all.

Peak Assault

One Friday evening a week or so ago I boarded a coach and set off for an unknown destination. No, it was not a mystery tour, but the Peak assault Competition!

Every year coach loads of Hertfordshire Scouting members, of Explorer age and above, get taken to “destination unknown”, set up camp and then spend the next couple of days yomping round "peaks" to gain as many points as possible in an orienteering event.

I joined them this year because we had two adult teams taking part and also an explorer team which was made up of six Scouts, three of which were 3rd Ware young leaders. There was also many other past and present members there as support teams or organisers.

When we arrived we found out that, this year, we were in the Peak district. The teams camped in two different places with the adults returning to base on the first night and the young people staying at "high camp" overnight.

Which way next?

A great weekend was had by all, the weather held and the sun even came out. The two leader teams did well coming 5th and 6th in their class, and the Explorers exceptionally well coming 8th out of 24 in their class.

It is very popular event and I am glad I got a chance to experience it this year.

Several times, recently, I have been down to Lynx Troop to witness Leaders and Scouts making their promise and being invested. The GSL has invested the Leaders and the Scout Leader the Scouts. Above is a typical moment during this ceremony.

Gus’s Night Hike

On Saturday 15th October, when we got to Roger De Clare school, the first thing we did was unpack our sleeping bags and we waited until it was our go to ride on the minibus to the starting place.

Eventually we started the night hike and passed some eerie, sinister, black cows, all dark with bright eyes! Next we got to our first base. What we had to do was collect chocolate from a cup by fishing the cup out of an area with string and an elastic band.

We then carried on walking and we arrived at a base where we boiled water on a Trangia stove. We had hot chocolate. After a while we carried on and walked back to the school. When I got back I felt exhausted and happy.

We watched films then went to bed. My favourite part was fishing out the chocolate and eating it.

I also met "Akela" the new mascot for Falcon Pack and had a chat! I told him what to expect from being a section mascot. He will be busy, but he has company; Snuggles, the Heron mascot will show him the ropes I am sure. I met him at the beginning of the year and he let me know what fun it is having adventures with the Cubs. He was right and I get the honour of joining the Beavers, Scouts, Young Leaders and Leaders as well!.

This week the GSL received his first completed 100 challenge sheet. Well done Tom, a Beaver from River Lea. You will be rewarded at a future point and will also get a special certificate for being the first person to complete the challenge.

What was great was that these challenges have been completed over the whole year, with something being done each month and many of them of them would not have been easy challenges. Tom did not take a soft option.

We are proud of him and thank his family for supporting him. Tom a few photos or words about some of the things you did for the blog would be great (hint, hint!)

What would you think if you saw this billboard outside a local shop?

Would you be surprised? Would you think anything of it? Would you buy the newspaper to find out what it was all about?

Well for us it was the icing on the cake. We knew that a short article about Lynx, our new Scout Troop was to be featured this week. We did not however realise that is was such a headline article and would be posted up around town.

Nocturnal

Last weekend I joined the Scouts at the annual nocturnal competition. The Scouts have to read a grid reference and then navigate their way to a base. Once there they undertake an activity.

This year included fire lighting, pioneering, first aid, an assault course, communication, a challenge, mapping and a hot drink. Points are awarded for each base and penalty points deducted for finishing late.

There are also several checkpoints to pas through en route to ennsure everyone is on tack and heading in the correct direction!

This year we did not fair so well coming 8th out of ten teams. Oh well we will try again next year!

Science with the Herons

Following on from my night away with the Herons and the trip to the museum, I was invited to participate in their Science evening.

We had fun with Gloop (cornflour and water). When you kneed it, it goes into a solid. When you let it rest it starts to go into liquid but is soon stopped by pulling it back together. They also made volcanoes! Those mad Herons certainly know how to have an explosive evening and get every ounce of fun out of simple things. I look forward to the next time I meet them.

In 2007 HELPING linked us with a Scout Group in The Gambia. Since then we have held many events to fund raise for our twinned troop.

This annual quiz night is held by the charity to raise funds for their various projects. All profit will go to the children.

Last weekend I attended WaGAwood. This is the annual Beaver camp that is run by 3rd Ware and 1st Great Amwell. Four years ago the camp was started and ever since has proved to be a popular event.

Each Beaver Scout is invited to bring one adult with them and the ethos of the camp is about enriching and enhancing the adult/child relationship. How often does a parent/carer get a whole 24 hours alone with one child, to take part in the same activities and not only experience first hand what their child is doing but also to be there as encouragement? Well at WaGAwood that is exactly what they get! (As well as good food, laughter and adventure!)

The leaders and older children stay for the whole weekend at Thriftwood and ensure that everything is ready for when the Beavers arrive. They assist the Beaver and adult in pitching their tent, and then a whirlwind of activity takes place. This year included pedal cars, inflate-Bull, a photo trail, pond dipping, backwoods cooking, a wide game, a campfire, scouts own, a scavenger hunt, a soft toy competition, time to play in the woods, a trip to the provi and more.

The meals are catered for centrally, so well done to the team who cooked for 155 people! However the Beavers (and adults!) learn about plate bags, washing up, wet pits and pig bins ready for when they are in Cubs.

Whilst this is taking place a sub camp runs for the leader’s children, who have to be there because their parents are, but who are Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, Guides or Explorers. The older ones do assist with the Beavers but as a group they do their own cooking, camp on a different field and have their own activities all over seen by a leader, who is there to supervise but also to step back and let them work as a “large” patrol. This year these included the Cresta run, surfing and bouldering in addition to some of the previously mention activities.

Once the Beavers are in bed the adults can congregate around the campfire and socialise and it is here that leader/parent relationships are made and stories swapped. WaGAwood has, in the past, resulted in adults asking to join the leadership team. If this is you please do contact the GSL of Great Amwell or 3rd Ware.

This was my first WaGAwood and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was even awarded a certificate at the cuddly toy competition for being the “centenaryist toy”!!

As the Beavers and parents left, they were full of praise for the camp and many a thank you was heard – the leaders then packed up the kit, cleaned the site drove home unloaded the trailers and went home feeling it was a job well done!

A trip to the shop

I am sure you have guessed by now that the destination of the Heron Cub Pack trip was the Natural History Museum in London and, as far as we know, all dinosaurs were still there when we left!

I had the privilege of travelling by train and tube with the Cubs to the Museum. Once there we looked in the Dinosaur section, visited the Blue Whale area, went to see human biology area and loved the investigation centre. Some of the Cubs claimed to have spotted Terry Wogan in the dinosaur section, which I saw made a few leaders give a wry smile!

We travelled back the HQ where we had an evening meal from the local fish and chip shop before gathering outside for a roaring campfire and making s’mores.

The Cubs then got into their sleeping bags and we all watched “One of our Dinosaurs is missing” before dropping off to sleep.

This morning we ate a breakfast of bacon rolls and watched some Looney tunes before the Cubs were collected and we locked up and came home.

Messing around on the water

Last Sunday a group of past and present 3rd Ware members took to the water. This was actually the August centenary event (alongside a window display) however booking restrictions saw it take place in September. So what did they do….?

They went white water rafting at the new Olympic competition course!

The two rafts of our members thoroughly enjoyed the evening and thought the instruction was second to none. A training session on the lake and then several runs down the course saw an exhilarated bunch get very wet and happily tired. The rapids were amazing and no one wanted the evening to end.

The evening was judged to be a fantastic success and the most heard word was “Brilliant!”

The evening was rounded off with food and drink and everyone who participated declared they would do it again because it was “brilliant” and those who were still under 14 and so could only spectate can not wait until after the Olympics when they will be old enough to take part!

Tug of War

Another annual event in our District calendar is the Beaver tug of war. Each year the colonies gather and compete against each other. The event ends with a traditional campfire for Beavers and parents alike. On Saturday we attended the 2011 TOW.

Here at 3rd Ware we have been fortunate enough to win this event many times over the last few years and it is one that our Beavers throw themselves into with gusto.

This year was the closest event for a long time! Three colonies tied for first place and so a “pull off” had to take place to get 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Sadly for us although River Ash was one of these 3, they ended up 3rd overall – still a fantastic achievement!

River Lea colony came joint 4th, along with three other colonies, after coming a close second (to River Ash, Great Amwell Bears and 2nd Ware). A really close contest with only a couple of points separating 7 colonies! No one could call the winner before the end which made for an exciting afternoon.

New Scout Troop is launched!

On Wednesday the new 3rd Ware Lynx Scout Troop was launched! A fantastic evening was spent getting to know each other and finding out how to use the many different types of stoves that one comes across at Scout camp. The GSL and I went to visit them and see how they were getting on.

A centenary after our formation 3rd Ware are still going strong; we are fortunate that the Group has always been full enough to provide continuous Scouting in Ware for over 100 years.

In 2007 as part of our celebrations, for the centenary of Scouting, we opened a second Beaver colony. River Ash joined River Lea and both colonies are now always full. They feed into our two Cub packs. This year, to celebrate 100 years of 3rd Ware, we have opened a second Scout Troop.

I went to join in with the fun and to meet the founding Scouts and the Leaders. Some of the Leaders have moved from our Friday Troop bringing with them years of experience, but we also have several brand new and enthusiastic Leaders who jumped at the chance to share this adventure. Thank you to them all.

It was great that so many young people wanted to be Scouts at 3rd Ware but was becoming a problem for us because we would soon not be able to offer them all places. It is thanks to already established Leaders and Scouts (and their families) who were prepared to be flexible and swap nights, as well as the new recruits, that we are now able to ensure all those who express an interest in joining our Troops can now be offered a place (for now!).

We look forward to them becoming an established and important part of 3rd Ware.

Winners

Well, Oxley Shield is over for another year and our Cubs thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Cubs have gone home for a well deserved bath and dinner and the leaders have taken the kit back to the stores.

The Falcons were delighted to once again be named as the winners. Well done to them, they fielded a strong and competent team and deserved their win.

The Herons put in a brave attempt and had a lot of fun and were finally declared in 10th place. A great effort Cubs.

During the event the Cubs had to, amongst other things, prepare and cook a meal on an open fire, put up a tent, tie and use six different knots, take part in an assualt course, use their tracking skills, show their first aid knowledge and light a fire. This is coupled with inspections and teamwork assessments.

After the evening meal the Cubs took part in a wide game and then a campfire where each Group presented an item. Then it was hot chocloate and into those sleeping bags ready for the morning and the Wildgoose craft competition, which this year involved making flowers for Akela out of unusal items! The item made changes each year.

Well done to the Herons for coming 2nd in the Wildgoose Competition, with the Falcons close behind in 3rd place.

Oxley Shield

This weekend I am off to The Oxley Shield. Each September Ware and District invite each Cub Pack to enter a team of six cubs into a skills and camping competition. The teams are made up of two eight year olds, two nine year olds and two ten year olds.

3rd Ware usually try to be inclusive and let as many young people as possible join events and so because the numbers are restricted on this one the two Cub packs do strive to ensure a variety of Cubs take part. This means the twelve Cubs who attend may or may not have taken part before depending on the ages of the Cubs at the time of the competition and the family commitments of the Cubs.

It is a fun weekend and is rounded off with a handicaft competition.

Last night I went to the HQ to join the Falcon Cubs at their first meeting of the new term and to witness one of the leaders being presented with an award. The county commissioner came down to join us and to make the presentation. Well done Baloo.

A sunday stroll along a river (or two).

The centenary event for September was a river walk. On a rather wet afternoon a group of leaders, young people and their families met at our HQ building and took me for a walk along the river.

We walked from Ware to Stanstead Abbotts and back again. On the way we stopped at the locks to look for boats and we tried opening the lock gates.The rain soon stopped and it was a very pleasant stroll with good company.

When we reached the other end we stopped for refreshments, gave our doggy friend a bowl of water and a treat and then returned via the New River. Here we saw swans, cygnets and lots of geese. In the fields horses were grazing and rabbits hopping around. We stopped to look at Emma's well.

It was a great way to round up the school holiday and to start a new term. Thank you all who attended.

This was my second river walk in as many months. I will update you on the other one when I have time.

The Scout one, which has been static for a long time, has finally moved on and is now in the lead with 2002.5 miles under its belt! Strangely enough it has travelled to the place our Scouts have just come back from - Denmark.

River Walk

Don't forget that our September Centenary activity is a Family River walk to Stanstead Abbotts. Just turn up and join us at the HQ on Sunday 4th September in suitable clothing and be ready to set off at 2pm.

There will not be anything organised at the other end (because the walk is the activity its self) and so feel free to bring a picnic, get a meal or refreshments from the Pub, turn around and walk straight back or even go to the station and get a train home.

Young people need an adult with them and so why not enjoy those last few hours of the school summer holidays together as a family and get some fresh air at the same time.

Denmark Adventure

I promised to tell you about our trip to Denmark.

Well where shall I start? It was a County expedition and we stayed at an international site in Denmark where we met Scouts from other countries. It was a great experience for us all.

Because 3rd Ware had 6 Scouts and a Young leader attend I was invited to join in the fun. There were no other monkeys at the campsite but I did meet a friend on the ferry going over.

I enjoyed going on a boat with the Scouts. They kept me well fed with chocolate and entertained me with many board and card games. Thanks to them and their leaders.

Whilst away we took part in may practical things. We cooked on wood fires, chopped the wood, built a swing and had a go in a Blacksmiths forge and at making a bracelet. Not to mention rowing the Viking boat and kayaking.

We had a day trip to Copenhagen where we toured the city, saw lots of Lego, celebrated a birthday and visited the Little Mermaid.

Another trip out was to Sweden, where we visited the World Scout Jamboree 2011. Here we got to visit the tents from many nations sample their food and drink, take part in their activities, collect souvenirs and meets Scouts and Guides from all over the world.

All Scout leaders work towards the Wood badge. When they gain this they are a fully trained leader and they are presented with a set of Wood Beads. This usually takes around 3 years to complete. I was allowed to try on a set for size in one of the UK tents.

Denmark

A few days ago six of our Scouts and one of our Young Leaders set off for Denmark and are joining Scouts from the rest of the county to attend a larger camp, experience life in Denmark and visit the 2011 Scout jamboree for a short while. (They are visiting, another of our young leaders is already there as a contingent member.)

I have joined them and am looking forward to the adventures and activities we will undertake whilst there. I wonder what we will do.

They don't have access to phones or computers whilst there and so I will update you when we get back!

As you know the Explorer Scouts (including some of our Young Leaders) have been in Brittany. They were staying at a Scout site. Sweden

I went to see off Ollie, one of our young leaders, who was leaving for Denmark where all the 4,000 UK contingents were meeting up. A great big party was held before those from the UK went on their way to Sweden, to meet up with 38,000 Other Scouts from 160 countries.

It has been raining a lot but has not stopped the fun, and they all enjoyed the opening ceremony last night with fireworks and Bear Grylls absailed in to hand over to Sweden.

Each of the sub camps are named after seasons with Ollie in Autumn. I am busy this summer visiting several of our members on various trips but hopefully will update you with more jamboree news at a later date.

Two 3rd Ware teams battle it out

Friday night was the annual Scout and Guide swimming gala at Ware Lido. The weather held and the young people enjoyed their races and the free swim at the end. We did not win but we had fun and supported each other.

The build

Saturday was a bit wetter! As part of the Ware festival a raft race is held every year. There are two prizes. One for the overall winner and one for the first placed Scout raft. Sometimes this is the same raft and others not.

3rd Ware Scouts always enter two or three rafts and sometimes one wonders if they actually want to complete the course or whether the aim is to break up in to lots of pieces and get to swim in the river!

This year the entire race took place in very heavy rain, however this did not dampen any ones spirits and if anything seemed to have the opposite effect and lots of smiles were seen.

The rafts were built, launched, raced and not a single one fell apart this year. All completed the course and 2nd Ware once again won the Scout trophy. Well done to them. I did however get a little ride on it before it was handed over.

On Wednesday 13th I went to the woods with River Lea Beavers and this time we were there to build shelters not play a wide game! The Beaver Leaders tell me that this is a traditional end of year activity, which is always popular.

Sadly the other one had to be abandoned this year as "rain stopped play" in the annual sports against 3rd Hertford Beavers.

Alexander says: "We went to the woods and used wood and branches and leaves and growing sticking to make shelters. We made a really really big one that we could all fit in. Gus came in as well. It was lots of fun and I really liked it. I hope we do it again."

This Tuesday I was invited out with Falcon Pack who were going bellboating at Stanborough Lakes as their last meeting of term. First I had to be fitted for my new lifejacket as my mum hadn't signed the form to say I could swim 50m in my hoodie and Akela thought the lifejackets at the lakes might be too big for me!

We got to the lakes and the Cubs put on their lifejackets before they could go on the water. They were divided into two groups and each had a turn paddling up and down the lake. Kaa showed the Cubs how to hold the paddle before they set off up and down the lake. I had a turn holding the paddle before watching from the bank.

After the Cubs had finished their turn in the boat they had a drink and crisps before going home. It was a fun evening and was enjoyed by all the Cubs as well as Will and Ollie our young leaders! I went home with Ollie as I am going shelter building in the woods with River Lea Beavers.

100 years of Scouting in Ware

In 1911 Ware and District was formed and Scouting in Ware was official! This week end we celebrated this is a big way. Over 700 members of our District camped at Woodhall Park and enjoyed the hospitality of the Abel Smith family who own the land and kindly let us camp there.

The weekend was packed with activities. Water slides, pioneering projects, tug of war, craft, archery, backwoods cooking, assault course, slack ropes, a disco, a film, a campfire and so much more.

The weather was no always on our side, or so it seemed, but we all managed to enjoy the time despite the wet afternoon and were witnesses to a double rainbow in the early evening which seemed to start in the craft tent.

The carnival was a real spectacle. We had been assigned Monsters, Inc. as our film and once our carnival "designer" had actually watched the film (yes she had never seen it...whoops!) the ideas came in full flow and the Young people and parents came up trumps as well with extra costumes.

Thanks for all that hard work. We made a colourful spectacle as we joined the other groups walking along side characters from Toy Story, 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin and many other films.

Badger and I had a go on the slack line and as you can see we were soon experts! This was a very popular activity with young and old alike. None of us were very good at it but the video clips showed us what could be achieved!

Rikki visited us and gave out some awards. One leader gained his wood badge and four others were awarded the Chief Scout's Commendation for Good Service. Well done to them.

The camp ended on Sunday after a tug of war competition and a gun run. It was a fantastic way to celebrate scouting and we were glad to share it with the rest of the District. Roll on the Party in December!

Everyone is home and the reports, which have reached my ears, are all positive. It was an amazing weekend and we filled it to the brim.

Time to go home

The Cubs and Beavers have left site and are hopefully home or on the way home telling tales of their camp exploits and adventures!

The Scouts are just about packed up, having decided against backwoods cooking. The Met Office say the temperature is 28 °C and so it was felt a blazing fire was not going to be the most appropriate activity, the new plan is, yes you guessed it, a Water fight! Then time to head home for one and all.

I will update you more once the kit is put away, both at the HQ and at home and we have all had time to recover.

Whilst the Beavers and Cubs are being fed and watered by the leadership team, the Scouts are fending for themselves.

They soon learn how to cook up a storm and enjoy taking part in providing for themselves and others. This morning started with the Scouts sizzling sausages, frying bacon and making eggy bread (French toast).

What could be better than the aroma of a cooked breakfast wafting across a campsite in the cool air of a Sunday morning?

Evening meal

Undaunted by the weather last night, we set up camp and then headed out for a wide game. After everyone was tired out we settled down into our tents to be lulled to sleep by the pitter patter of rain drops.

We all awoke from a very wet night to a lovely dry day and after breakfast set off for our activities. The Beavers arrived and duly got stuck into their own programme. Everyone had a great morning grass sledging, climbing, shooting etc and we were all ready for lunch, which we enjoyed together at the Lodge.

In case you did not guess our special visitor was Wayne Bulpitt, the UK Chief Commissioner of The Scout Association. We knew he was at Gilwell Park this weekend and so we invited him to drop by. He called in at lunchtime and we are really grateful that he would give his time to visit us. The GSL had a quick chat with him and Dormouse made him a cup of tea and said he is a really lovely gentleman.

We then set off again to the afternoon activities and the Scouts headed for the hills (well the trees really) where they enjoyed a fantastic cycle ride through Epping Forest.

The temperature has been steadily increasing and so were all (except the Beavers who were otherwise engaged) ready for a swim to cool down..this predictably turned into a water fight against the leaders, but then again I am not sure who enjoyed that more the Cubs and Scouts or the Adults.

Dinner is Al fresco tonight due to the beautiful evening weather. The smiles say it all! The Scouts are cooking for themselves in their field. It has ben a great day and a fitting way to celebrate 100 Scouting years.

Who said our camps revolve around food? We have just settled down to our Picnic lunch at the Branchet Lodge, before we head off to even more activities this afternoon.

We may be Centenarians but we are very active!

For the Cubs and the Scouts the excitement of the first night is over, breakfast has been taken and we are ready for the day!

The Cubs have grass sledging, Aeroball, pedal karts, swimming and the climbing wall to look forward to.

The Scouts will enjoy rifle shooting, the Leap of faith, swimming and a cycle ride in Epping Forest.

The Beavers have yet to arrive (due anytime now!) but after claiming their bunk will have the revolving rock, low ropes, grass sledging, games and craft to enjoy.

In 2007 we camped at Gilwell as a Group and the Grass sledging proved very popular with two of the leaders (Can you recognise them?) I wonder which activity will be a favourite this time?

We also hope that, if his schedule allows, a special visitor will join us at some point and I will hopefully finally achieve my mission to get a photograph of him and me!!

...yes it is centenary camp time. This time it is the Group camp (everyone not just the Scouts). I am packed, the trailer is loaded, the bike is on the car roof, the advanced party has arrived and we have set off for Gilwell. I will update you when I can.
